Juan Ponce de Leon had many contributions to history. He is most known for his finding of Florida and search for the Fountain of Youth. He was also a respected explorer and leader and was appointed governor of many colonies. His eagerness to spread Spains wealth as well as his own got him ambushed by Indians and soon later died from an arrow.

            In this painting Juan Ponce de Leon is wearing a conquistador outfit, consisting of a long sleeve white collared shirt, armored chest-plate, and a feathered hat. He is also exhibiting some facial hair of a mustache and short beard. In the background there is a picture of a ship sailing in the water.

            This picture is about Juan Ponce de Leon and depicts his love for the sea and conquest. I chose this artwork because it was the best and most well-known portrait of Juan Ponce de Leon. I feel that this portrait portrays everything about him from his love of sailing depicted by the ship in the background to the clothing that tells us what kind of person he is.  

            What I want to know more about this artwork is who the artist was. Was he a friend of his or a hired worker. I would also like to know when this was taken and the reason behind the self portrait.
